And the two new Nikkor Z lenses to be announced with the Z9 next week are….

I already mentioned on several occasions that we can expect at least one, possibly even two new Nikkor Z-mount lenses with the Nikon Z9 announcement next week (October 28). The reason for the confusion is that we will get one real announcement and one development announcement – at least those are the latest rumors. Here is what to expect:

Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS S lens: official announcement next weekNikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 S lens: development announcement next week

Nikon updated their Nikkor Z mirrorless lens roadmap

Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens tested at DxOMark: the highest score ever achieved and the best sensor/lens combo ever tested

Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens tested at DxOMark: the highest score ever achieved and the best sensor/lens combo ever tested

DxOMark published their test results for the Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens. With the Nikon Z7 this is the best sensor/lens association DxO has ever tested (it replaces the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM with the Nikon D850). The actual DxO Mark test score is 55 – the highest score ever achieved. Here are the top 5 best lenses according to DxO Mark:

The 58mm Noct offers high center sharpness even when wide open, and homogeneity in the field of view that improves when stopping down. The light transmission is impressive at 1.1 T-Stop thanks to the f/0.95 aperture. Some of the drawbacks are vignetting and some lateral chromatic aberration which of course are typical for lenses of this type. DxO’s conclusion:

“Like the original Noct-Nikkor was showcasing Nikon’s optical expertise back in the ’70s and ’80s, so too is the new Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct. It has a phenomenal optical performance. Indeed, the new Noct on the Nikon Z 7 achieved the highest score by any lens and camera combination that we’ve seen to date. However, at close to $8000, it’s pricey and both the size and weight, not to mention the long-throw manual focus, are all sure to limit its appeal. Movie studios and rental houses won’t flinch though, nor will the well-heeled seeking the signature look of a highly-corrected ultra-high-speed lens, but for everyone else, it’s the kind of lens that people only dream of. In this review, we have compared the Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct mounted on a Nikon Z 7 to its closest rivals from other brands. Remember that the lenses may be used on various cameras with different sensors, or in some cases on different camera systems using different mounts, so the results will vary between them.”

Nikon Z9: “this is no catch-up game from Nikon, it’s surpassing the competition with huge margins” (plus a freshly leaked picture of the Z9)

Nikon Z9: “this is no catch-up game from Nikon, it’s surpassing the competition with huge margins” (plus a freshly leaked picture of the Z9)

First, here is a new freshly leaked picture of the upcoming Nikon Z9 camera:

Back In August I already mentioned that the Nikon Z9 in 2021 will be for Nikon what the Nikon D3 was for Nikon back in 2007 – it will bring Nikon back on top, at least in terms of technology (hopefully the sales will follow as well) – this is what I was told, not my words since I have not seen, used or touched the Z9:

I was told by multiple people that the Z9 could easily be another “D3 moment” – a significant advance in camera technology and performance (the D3 announcement in 2007 positioned Nikon back on top). The camera will have a “D3 level of innovation” – it will be far more than a D6 in mirrorless form. The dual-pixel sensor will allow an EVF near equal to an optical viewfinder, faster frame rates, effectively no blackout, and no significant rolling shutter. There is also a major update to the AF system. Even critics and skeptics who are testing the camera are speaking very positively about it. Expect to see some amazing Z9 sample photos from surfing in Mexico.

I was told that the Nikon Z9 is already in products and I received several more tips from people close to the manufacturing process in Asia confirming the above statement – here are some quotes:

Nikon Z6II and Z7II firmware updates version 1.30 released

Nikon Z6II and Z7II firmware updates version 1.30 released

Nikon released new firmware updates version 1.30 for the Z6II and Z7II mirrorless cameras – here are the details:

Nikon Z6II firmware update version 1.30

Portrait impression balance items have been added to the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU and MOVIE SHOOTING MENU.The monitor now shows the shooting display at all times while tilted when On is selected for Image review in the PLAYBACK MENU.Voice memo has been added to the options available for Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls) > Movie record button in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. In this role, the movie-record button can be used during playback to record and play voice memos up to 60 seconds long.Fixed the following issues:Custom Setting f4 (Aperture lock) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU was not available when an FTZ mount adapter was attached.Although focus would normally remain locked if the AF-ON button was kept pressed while the shutter-release button was used to take a series of pictures, the camera would refocus without input from the AF-ON button if shooting was suspended with:Custom Setting a6 (AF activation) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU set to AF-ON only with Enable selected for Out-of-focus release,Continuous L or Continuous H selected for Release mode,Single AF selected for Focus mode, andSingle-point AF selected for AF-area mode. The flash-ready light on SB-5000 flash units would not light if a WR-R10 or WR-R11b was used for wireless remote flash photography.

Nikon Z9 teaser #3

Nikon Z9 teaser #3

The third Nikon Z9 teaser is out:

The new teaser shows the Z9 fast shooting mode. A reader downloaded the video, imported it in Premiere and slowed it down enough to count – that burst is 35 frames. The burst lasts for 1.7 seconds so that’s a pretty solid confirmation of the Z9 shooting at 20 fps (the rumored specifications suggested 30 fps):
